In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Buxton became one of England’s most fashionable spa destinations. Guests travelled from across the country to “take the waters” at the magnificent Crescent, built by the 5th Duke of Devonshire in the 1780s to rival Bath as a centre of health, society and refinement. Visitors would promenade beneath the colonnades, gather in the Assembly Rooms, and enjoy leisurely breakfasts and conversation as part of the daily social ritual of the spa town.
