John Graves Simcoe, who stayed at the Townsend home for three consecutive winters, transformed the corps into a legion of infantry and cavalry, which took part in many of the British Army’s major campaigns until their surrender at Yorktown.

He is the author of Bergen County Voices of the American Revolution and Grand Forage 1778, as well as co-author or contributing author of seventeen other books on the American Revolution.
