We have a 2 night minimum stay at Spindrift, but you are welcome to stay as long as you like to continue to explore the area.   Inclusions Accommodation - Luxury The barn is beautifully appointed and full of character, created from finds at local salvage yards and antique shops . The staircase winds around a massive newel post from a wharf in West Sussex and the name “Spindrift Barn” was inspired by the connections with the sea and the feeling of inspiration and relaxation that the Barn provides. We are a short riverside walk from Exford with its two pubs, shop and popular tearoom. There is a woodburner and under floor heating in the lounge with a generous, fully equipped kitchen (washer/drier, dishwasher) at one end. With a walk-in rain forest shower and infra red sauna and a fabulously comfortable double bed you are guaranteed a restful and indulgent break! We will plan your walk to give the maximum chance of seeing wildlife, including the native Exmoor Red Deer, Exmoor ponies and the fabulous Highland cattle that have been introduced to graze the moor……come in Spring when the woolly calves and foals make irresistable photo opportunities. Exmoor Horn lambs have to be up there amongst the cutest yet with their “little devil” horn buds and the moorland birds on Exmoor include plentiful buzzards, meadow pipits and skylarks as well as the less common such as the beautiful Hen harrier which is increasingly being seen on Exmoor. We can also create a safari to take in archeological sites, industrial heritage or picturesque churches or iron age hill forts….just let us know where your interests lie. - Enjoy Sundowners at Dunkery Beacon and spot Red Deer on the way home…..probably watching us watching them! - Check out The Incline at Chargot Woods; a miracle of 19th century engineering Stroll amongst the Prehistoric Barrows of the ancient ridgeway following the SW border of Exmoor Forest, with a choice of pubs for lunch. We meet at the Exford Bridge Tearooms to share a delicious barbecue cooked by your hosts, Bruce and Claire. Then the sociable part of our stargazing evening kicks off with a planetarium presentation with "Wildaboutexmoor" on the widescreen tv to show you around those clear Exmoor skies. Deeper sky objects are found and explored and then we head out to try out our telescopes with an optional dark skies walk at a small extra cost to finish off the evening, weather and darkness permitting. Winter hours, and during the dark Skies Festival in October/November, we start at 6.00pm, rather than 7.00pm. Spend the morning exploring Dunster castle, the administrative centre of Dunster Estate since 1066. Now owned by the National Trust, the castle was home  to the Luttrell family for 600 years and has a fascinating history. The Castle itself is open from March to October. Extensive gardens spiral down the sides of the castle mound and are available all year round.  Dunster itself is a great place to wander, with plenty of individual shops and tea rooms, and the historic 16th century yarn market crowning the top of the high street. Wool from the Exmoor Horn sheep was very valuable back then, and packhorses would carry it in from more remote parts of the moor to be sold at the market. We recommend lunch by the roaring fire at the historic Luttrell Arms, and then walk it all off with a stroll over Gallox Bridge and through the deer park ,spotting fallow and roe deer and Exmoor ponies. Our route takes you over the iron age hillfort of Batts Castle with its useful information board and great views of the coast, the castle and Conygar tower, an 18th century folly. Dunster by candlelight is a magical event held every December. The town roads are closed and all the residents join in by lighting their houses by candlelight and decorating gardens with fairylights. Market stalls abound and quantities of mulled wine and street food are on offer, with the many artisan shops throwing open their doors to Christmas shoppers. Take a walk up through the illuminated gardens of the castle and enjoy carols by the tree in the salon, then meander through the back lanes. Join us for sundowners in a forest clearing in Exmoor National Park, while we chat about nightjars and the natural history around us.. Take a walk through the forest to see the tallest tree in England and enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest as night falls. Listen out for the mystical churring of the migratory nightjars as we approach their heathland habitat and look out for deer and bats, a memorable and mystical evening. A great way to conjure up the atmosphere of Old Exmoor, we seek out the exact views and features that inspired this tale of love and outlaws.....something for everyone. If you prefer poetry we can meet at Porlock Weir, a picturesque little harbour with a collection of ancient cottages clustered around an old smugglers pub, The Ship. Walking in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's footsteps we climb up through ancient woodland to see the house where he wrote Kubla Khan, until rudely interrupted by "a man from Porlock". We return via Culbone church, the smallest parish church in England, and back through the grounds of Ada Lovelace's country house, Lord Byron's only legitimate daughter. You have a choice of two walking tours with Wildaboutexmoor, to experience what life was like back in the Victorian time. 1) a fairly energetic promenade taking in both the town of Lynton and The scenic Valley of the Rocks. 2) a more gentle walking tour of Lynton. This walk is an appreciation of the town itself, with more time to enjoy the architecture of the town hall and 2 significant churches. Both tours re-live the atmosphere of the 1952 flood disaster with a visit to the exhibition and a stroll up to the memorial gardens on the East Lyn river. Take a trip on the famous Lynton and Lynmouth funicular Cliff Railway opened in 1890, the highest and the steepest totally water powered railway in the world! This spectacular “Lift”connects the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth providing stunning coastal views that will be the highlight of any visit. Then Step back in time at Woody Bay Station, opened in 1898, and closed along with the rest of the railway in September 1935. Purchased by us in 1995, what you can see today at the station is just the beginning of an exciting project to rebuild one of the world's most famous and picturesque narrow gauge railways; the legendary Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. The ideal starting point for a two mile round trip through some of the loveliest countryside in North Devon on a steam locomotive. Woody Bay Station is the place to board our little narrow gauge train for a journey back in time. You might just see our resident buzzard flying overhead or perhaps a hare or sometimes even a deer as you experience the sights of heather-covered hills and wooded valleys of North Devon – on clear days you can see all the way across to Wales – not to be missed!
