Construction & Material
-
Made from Royalex, a multi-layer ABS-plastic/foam composite known for its impact resistance and durability.
- Because Royalex was discontinued, these are older but highly regarded canoes.
- Specifications (from Mohawk spec archive):
-
Length: 11' 8″
-
Beam (width): 28″ at gunwale / ~27.5″ at 4″ waterline
-
Weight: ~45 lb
-
Estimated Capacity (6″ freeboard): ~593 lb; (8″ freeboard): ~404 lb
-
Depth: ~15.5″ at mid-hull
-
Rocker (hull curve): ~4.5″
-
Excellent maneuverability: Because of its short length and rocker, the Probe 11 is highly responsive and performs well in tight or technical water.
-
Secondary stability: It has very good side-stability due to flare in its hull, which helps when surfing or leaning into turns.
-
Rolling & surfing: Paddlers report it rolls easily and surfs well if you lean back slightly to keep the bow from diving.
-
Whitewater capability: While not designed for super extreme Class V rapids, it's capable of handling Class II–III and, in the hands of experienced paddlers, even more challenging water.
- Durability: The Royalex construction gives the boat strong rock-striking resistance, making it reliable on rocky stretches.
- Being a solo canoe, it’s outfitted for either kneeling or sitting based on paddler preference.
- Its relatively low weight makes it easier to carry in and out of put-in points.
Pros:
- Very nimble and playful — great for surf, small rivers, and technical runs.
- Durable construction with Royalex.
- Lightweight for a Royalex canoe.
- Because it’s short, tracking (going straight) may be less effective than in longer canoes — frequent course corrections might be needed.
- Its performance in bigger water requires skill, particularly to keep the bow up when surfing or running waves.
-
Finding one for sale may be more challenging — Mohawk is no longer mass-producing, so most Probe 11s are used.
