Upper & Middle Buffalo Bayou | A Look at Hurricane Harvey Consequences (Full Day)

Upper & Middle Buffalo Bayou | A Look at Hurricane Harvey Consequences (Full Day)

Buffalo Bayou Paddling Trail: Buffalo Bayou is Houston’s original paddling trail, stretching about 26 miles from Highway 6 down to Allen’s Landing near downtown. Even though you’re in the city, you’ll often see birds, turtles, fish, and other wildlife, plus interesting exposed banks of sand/sandstone and red clay in places. The full route is too long for one day, but individual segments make great half‑day paddles (roughly 1.5–4 hours depending on flow). Water quality can vary and is generally not suitable for swimming—plan for hand hygiene, and avoid paddling during high/turbulent conditions or near hazardous log jams (“strainers”). Access points you can list (choose the ones that match your specific trip segment): Highway 6 — 29.7694, -95.6434 Terry Hershy Park — 29.7733, -95.6233 Dairy Ashford Rd — 29.7617, -95.6064 West Sam Houston Pkwy — 29.7622, -95.5583 Briar Bend Park — 29.7460, -95.5072 Woodway Memorial Park — 29.7647, -95.4569 Hogg Bird Sanctuary — 29.7583, -95.4217 Eleanor Tinsley Park — 29.7617, -95.3783 Sabine Street Access — 29.7622, -95.3736 Allen’s Landing Park — 29.7647, -95.3592 Duration: 10 -12 hours.  Paddling Time: 10 hours.  Paddling Distance: 18 miles.   Inclusions Accommodation - Luxury Awesome destination. Scenic & Historical Double Bayou | Texas Gulf Coast Wetlands Eco Tour (Full Day)

Scenic & Historical Double Bayou | Texas Gulf Coast Wetlands Eco Tour (Full Day)

Fort Anahuac (Est. 1830) is strategically positioned to overlook the entrance to Trinity River.  Double Bayou, located near the old Fort Anahuac in East Texas, is a scenic and historical bayou ending in the Trinity Bay (east of Galveston Bay). Double Bayou is a two-pronged clean and meandering bayou with East Fork and West Fork converging at Job Beason Park.  This area is host to songbirds, wading birds, and waterfowl of many varieties.  Job Beason, for whom the park is named, was the keeper for Double Bayou Lighthouse in the early 1900. He was found floating face down in the water in December 1909. The hurricane of 1915 destroyed the lighthouse, and it was not rebuilt.  The lower 3 miles of West Fork has been dredged to allow traffic for shallow-draft commercial barges. Shrimp boats often moored in this section. Cattle ranching is the most obvious use of the coastal grassland along the bayou now, although historically there was rice farming, often wiped out by saltwater flooding during tropical storms.  The stream banks are forested with aged oaks, elms, gums, cypress, and pine trees providing wind and wave sheltered waters and shade to paddlers. Usually, there are lots of birds to be seen. When we paddled it last, we greatly enjoyed the natural scenery and relaxed on the quiet waters. It was peaceful and lovely tour!  With a bit of planning involving a shuttle, this tour can be executed as only one-way down-river experience.  Duration: 10 hours.  Paddling Time: 6-7 hours.  Paddling Distance: 15 miles.   Inclusions Accommodation - Luxury Awesome destination. Stubblefield Lake and West Fork of San Jacinto River | Stream Geomorphology Field Trip

Stubblefield Lake and West Fork of San Jacinto River | Stream Geomorphology Field Trip

Lake Stubblefield is the northern part of Conroe Lake and represents the transition segment between West Fork of San Jacinto River and Lake of Conroe. This is an easy paddling ecotour and geomorphology field trip about 5-7 miles long to explore the calm waters of this quiet, green, and beautiful environment, part of the Sam Houston National Forest.  As we paddle along, we will observe natural features specific to deltas. We will discuss about sedimentary processes associated with streams, lakes, floods, wetlands, and the anthropologic impact on this environment, while enjoying many kinds of flowers and wildlife, including birds such as egrets, herons, owls, hawks, and water lilies.  In 1966, the upstream part of West Fork of San Jacinto River (WFSJR) was blocked by an earth dam to form Lake Conroe, as an alternate drinking water reserve for Metropolitan Houston. Conroe Dam is 2 miles long and has 5 gates of 40 ft. wide each. The dam was completed in 3 years and cost $84 million to build. WFSJR is the main water-sediment supply that feeds into Lake Conroe. Lake Conroe was filled with water in 10 months. Lake Conroe facts: 26 miles long; 6 miles wide at its widest point; 20 ft. average depth; 75 ft. deep in the river channel; 160 miles of shoreline, with normal pool at 201 ft. above main sea level. Lake Conroe water quality is good, water from dam flows across Montgomery County into Lake Houston.  Despite being relatively close to a major metropolitan area, exploring WFSJR by kayak is a unique experience for most people: you will be amazed by its natural beauty and it's a cool learning experience!  Duration: 4-5 hours.  Paddling Time: 3-4 hours.  Paddling Distance: 5-7 miles.   Inclusions Accommodation - Luxury Awesome destination.
