Overview
Announcement: ACA Level 2: Essentials of Canoeing Skills Course on Saturday, August 22, 2026 in Houston, TX!
Most commonly taking place on lakes, bays, and calm sections of rivers, canoeing is the perfect way to explore incredible scenery with friends and family. Whether you're looking to relax on the water, enjoy the outdoors, or master the art of traditional paddling, this course is a fantastic fit!
Taught by an ACA L3 certified instructor, this full-day course is designed as a comprehensive introduction to paddling canoes on flatwater and gently moving protected waters. Participants will learn how to efficiently control and maneuver a canoe, recognize and avoid environmental hazards, perform essential rescues, and respond confidently to emergencies.
This class is ideal for beginners who have never paddled a canoe before, as well as intermediate paddlers looking for a formal skills refresher—whether you want to improve boat control, feel stable leaning without grabbing the gunwales, or master keeping your canoe gliding in a straight line.
On dry land, we will spend time covering equipment selection, safety theory, and hazard recognition, followed by active on-water instruction and rescue practice. We teach proper techniques for launching, landing, tandem stroke mechanics, maneuvers, partner communication, and self/assisted rescues.
No previous experience required! We bring all the gear needed for the successful completion of this course—including canoes, paddles, lifejackets, and dry bags. A canoeing partner is recommended, but single registrants are also welcome!
