Overview
Our adaptive paddling program is designed for kids with special needs and for people with disabilities, including individuals with vision/blindness, speech/language, or hearing/deftness impairments, as well as physical disabilities.
Patrons get to experience paddling in a safe learning environment and gain confidence in own abilities! Everyone’s needs are different. We want to help you, but it's best to first contact us to discuss your circumstance.
We can take you in a guided eco-tour as a passenger in a tandem canoe or tandem kayak (the guide will do all the paddling) or plan for you to paddle solo in one of our watercrafts.
We have years of experience in working with kids on the Autism Spectrum and with people with motoric/movement disabilities. We also worked well with paddlers that experienced: local paralysis, balance and coordination problems, arthritis of the back, neck, shoulders or hands; traumatic brain injuries, muscular dystrophy, PTSD, cognitive/intellectual disabilities, limited mobility or range of motion; shoulder surgeries, upper extremity fractures; wrist, elbow or shoulder tendonitis.
Our Adaptive Paddling program is open to all individuals who acknowledge the ability to perform the following Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC):
1\. Breathe independently (i.e., not require medical devices to sustain breathing).
2\. Independently maintain sealed airway passages while under water
3\. Independently hold head upright without neck / head support
4\. Manage personal care independently or with assistance of a companion
5\. Manage personal mobility independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance
6\. Follow instructions and effectively communicate independently or with assistance of a companion
7\. Independently turn from face-down to face-up and remain floating face up while wearing a properly fitted life jacket\\*
8\. Get on / off or in / out of a kayak-canoe independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance\\*
9\. Independently get out and from under a capsized kayak-canoe
10\. Remount or reenter the kayak-canoe following deep water capsize independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance\\*
11\. Maintain a safe body position while attempting skills, activities and rescues, and have the ability to recognize and identify to others when such efforts would be unsafe given your personal situation\\*
\\\To participate in adaptive programs, participants must acknowledge only the first six EEC listed above.

WHAT TO BRING AND HOW TO DRESS
Bring several 33 oz. / 1L water bottles and energy drinks to take with you in the kayak; a granola bar and a small thermos would be nice. Dehydration and heat stroke are of the biggest concerns being on the water this time of the year. Leave a cold-water bottle and a snack in the car for you to have ready at the end of the event when you will probably be hungry, hot, tired but happy!
Bring with you but leave in the car a full set of dry clothing into change at the end, should that be needed, and a large towel to cover your car seat for a comfortable ride home.
We will take meaningful precautions to avoid unintended capsizes, however, small crafts are unstable and water dripping off the paddle into your lap is possible. Dress for immersion by dressing with clothes made of synthetic materials that are comfortable and dry out quickly. Avoid any cotton clothing. Dress with a long sleeve shirt and long pants to avoid insects and sunburns. For exposed skin, bring sunscreen and plan to apply often. Your feet will get wet up to knee. Water shoes, closed toed sandals, or old sneakers are a great kayaking choice. Crocs, flip-flops, hiking boots and rain boots are not good options. Bring a large brim hat with under chin strap and sunglasses. Bring paddling gloves or cycling/workout gloves to prevent blisters and sunburn.

Paddling is a wonderful, lifelong, low-impact, human-powered sport. It's a form of soul therapy, an awesome mode of transportation to remote destinations, and a stealthy way to intimately experience wildlife and nature. Hiring us, you will learn about equipment, proper strokes and correct paddling technique, basics of water safety, trip planning, and how to have an enjoyable time on the water. This is a great way to build a new skill set or improve upon what you already know about paddling. Thank you for signing up!
