Treak Cliff Cavern is a genuine wonder in the heart of the Peak District. Treak Cliff Hill is the only place in the world where Blue John Stone occurs naturally. The self-guided audio tour will explain how Blue John Stone was formed, miners in the 1750s constructed a tunnel using only hand tools to reach the Blue John Stone deposits within the hill, and you will see incredible veins of the stone across the cavern roof and hear about the recent discovery of the ‘lost vein’ of Blue John Stone that had been hidden for almost 70 years. This December, the Witch’s Cave at Treak Cliff Cavern transforms into a breath taking underground wonderland for our Carols by Candlelight. Surrounded by shimmering Blue John stone, glowing candlelight, and the natural acoustics of the cavern, you’ll be swept into an unforgettable festive experience. Raise your voice to your favourite Christmas carols as the cavern flickers, and comes alive with music. A full guided tour is available before the Carols by Candlelight and will start at 1.00 pm and is available at the cost of £5.00pp this can be booked as an add on to your ticket. ✨ A magical afternoon for all ages. 🎶 Carol singing in a stunning underground setting. ☕ Mulled wine & mince pies. The carol singing lasts for approximately one hour, with hot mulled wine and mince pies served afterwards. Children aged 4 and under are FREE and do not need to have tickets. This Experience gives you the opportunity to work with our craftsmen and gives you a 'hands on' unique experience of Blue John Stone.  You will get suited and booted and expect to get muddy, as we take you underground to prospect for your very own piece of Blue John Stone.  This involves ducking under rock arches and stepping up and down on rough, and loose surfaces. You will need to be able to crouch under 4foot , kneel and step over/ up approx. 2foot. Once you have discovered your piece you will go into the workshop, where our craftsmen will help you clean and assess what you have found. You will then have the chance to turn your chunk of Blue John into a polished or natural specimen. In the afternoon you will set an item of silver jewellery with Blue John Stone. Choose from a ring, a pendant, a tie slide or go free style and create a free form pendant on a leather cord Be aware we are on a steep hillside so there is no wheelchair access to or inside the Cavern, and some areas underground are low and narrow. This Experience gives you the opportunity to work with our craftsmen and gives you a 'hands on' unique experience of Blue John Stone.  This experience is purely workshop based, you will be able to choose from an array of pre-mined pieces of Blue John stone in the workshop, where our craftspeople will help you to turn your chunk of Blue John into a polished specimen on our grinding wheels, and sand it with different grades of abrasive paper until ready for the final polishing stage. After a short break for a hot drink made from our naturally filtered cave water you will return to the workshop to create a freeform Blue John pendant on cord, our craftspeople will supervise while you polish it to a lovely shine, and attach a leather cord. Then you can try your necklace on and adjust the length to fit. Since each piece of Blue John Stone has distinctive pattern and colour combinations, you’ll be creating very own piece of unique jewellery.
