Mountain Hare Photography Experience

Mountain Hare Photography Experience

As featured in Guardian Travel 12th Oct 2020 and the Sunday Times 27th Dec 2020 A fantastic and unique photography and nature based walking experience which takes you on a walk through one of the wildest parts of the Peak District National Park. Your guide will assist you to take great photographs and you will have plenty of time to photograph or just watch and observe the amazing mountain hares in their natural habitat. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the ecology and restoration of these amazing bog and moorland habitats. For those without their own camera this is still an amazing opportunity to experience these rare animals. Photograph and observe rare mountain hares Learn about this unique area’s nature and conservation with your guide Private tour tailored specifically to you 5 to 8 hour experience (depending on your timing preferences). The highest points of the Peak District are the only places in England where you can still find Mountain Hares. During winter, when they change to their white winter coats, is the best time to view and photograph Mountain Hares in their natural habitat. Most people will never see them when walking in the hills but I have a 100% record of seeing them on these trips. The day will be planned specifically for you and will provide plenty of time to photograph, or just to watch these amazing animals. It goes without saying that it's worth taking along a camera with a long lens or zoom and binoculars if you have them. To get to the optimum locations involves a walk of around 3 miles in each direction, starting from the Snake Pass road, between Glossop and Sheffield. After a gradual climb of around 200m (600ft) we reach a flattening from where we leave the Pennine Way path. I will navigate you across the complex moorland terrain to some of the best locations to see and photograph Mountain Hares in their natural habitat. There will also be the chance of seeing short eared owls, golden plover, red grouse, kestrels and other wildlife on these trips as well as learning about the ecology and restoration of these amazing bog and moorland habitats. All trips are undertaken in accordance with the Wildlife Photographers Code of Conduct to avoid disturbance to protected species. All our events are approved as "Good to Go" Covid-secure by Visit England. If you'd like to discuss the walk or other options before booking please contact us. Thanks, Paul Smith, myGuidedWalks.   Inclusions What's Included 📋 Other - Experienced award winning guide and qualified Mountain Leader.   What you'll need 🧤 Warm Clothing ☂️ Waterproofs 🍴 Food 🥤 Drink 📋 Other - Hiking Boots essential. 3 hour Bespoke Astrophotography Workshop

3 hour Bespoke Astrophotography Workshop

Highlights Workshops are practical astrophotography sessions aimed at capturing amazing images of the night sky with tuition and assistance from me. All workshops are delivered on a private bespoke basis (you can also book for more than 1 person or a small group of friends). Either use your own equipment or I can demonstrate using my equipment or a combination of both. I have a range of equipment from small pocket trackers with a camera to telescopes on computer controlled mounts with cooled astrophotography cameras. Workshops can be delivered either from your own garden or other agreed outdoor or dark sky location (see more on locations below). Each workshop will be planned around your aims and interests and level of experience. Subjects can include but are not limited to: introduction to astrophotography, astrophotography with just a camera including timelapses, widefield and nightscapes including landscape astrophotography, astrophotography with a DSLR + basic star tracker, astrophotography using a computer controlled mount. Objects to image could include constellations, the Milky Way, the aurora borealis (northern lights), Deep Sky Objects including emission nebulae, reflection nebulae and galaxies, star clusters, star trails, the moon, planetary "Lucky Imaging", basic solar imaging using a solar safety filter. Available from £50 per hour (based on a standard hourly rate of £65, discounted to £50 if you purchase credits for 10 or more hours). Minimum workshop duration 3 hours. I will arrive approx. 1 hour before the start of your session to set up. Longer sessions and multiple nights can also be booked at locations within the UK. Your booking is also valid for any Bespoke Astrophotography Training. Available across the Peak District, East Cheshire, Manchester and North Staffordshire areas. Available at wider locations across England and Wales for an additional supplement. Accessible experiences available - you can even sit inside, linked via Wi-Fi to a telescope outside. Voucher valid for 1 year from the date purchased. Note: the date/time you select is the start of your 12 month validity. See weather and flexibility section below. Please feel free to contact me directly to discuss the experience content, timings and locations before booking. Why choose Peak Astronomy? Unlike many astronomy experiences we will have the ability to use telescopes equipped with dedicated cooled astronomy cameras and specialist filters to view the night sky. This opens up the opportunity to experience the colourful world of deep sky objects including galaxies, nebulae and also the milky way. Astronomy also becomes much more accessible in urban areas with higher levels of light pollution. Without the use of a telescope equipped with a camera you would be limited to only observing the brighter objects such as stars, star clusters, the brighter planets and the moon. Depending on the length of your experience there is also the option to capture a high quality image which I will then carefully process for you after the event. This will normally take up about an hour of your experience, and it will give you a good understanding of what is involved in astrophotography. If the skies stay clear, and my availability allows, I will continue capturing the image after your experience ends - with astrophotography the longer you capture an image the better the quality. Please contact me whenever you are ready to discuss options for the content of your experience, either before or after purchasing your activity. We will also discuss potential locations for your activity, select a provisional date (if not already booked), or if you prefer you can just indicate roughly when you'd like it to take place. Depending on what you wish to focus your experience on could also influence the best times to hold your experience, such as taking account of moon phases and the astronomical seasons. I can help guide you on selecting a suitable date and location. Flexibility & Weather For me, flexibility is key to planning a successful night under the stars. For all outdoor astronomy activities your booking is valid for 1 year from the time of purchase. You can book a date and then reschedule if the weather isn't suitable, unless you'd prefer to go ahead on the booked date or have a training session instead.  I will regularly review weather forecasts, and keep you updated in the week leading up to your booking.  A final decision to go ahead will usually be taken within 24hrs of the booked date, although I'll take account of the level of flexibility you have, travel plans etc.  I always aim to be as flexible as I can in order to ensure you have the best chance of a successful night and I'm happy to discuss any plans or changes. If you're not located within easy reach of the area we can also discuss how best to make a booking work for you, such as booking accommodation that can be cancelled if we need to reschedule or having a backup plan for indoors. Partly cloudy weather can still be good but forecasts of full cloud cover or rain will often require a reschedule or change of location ( just relocating by 10 miles can sometimes have a big difference).  Timings shown are approximate only and may depend on hours of darkness and the weather. Locations All activities are bespoke and can take place at any suitable location in the area or at your own home or another agreed location such as a holiday property or suitable countryside location. The listed prices cover delivery at locations within a 25 miles radius of my base in Macclesfield. This includes the whole of the Peak District and most of Cheshire East, North Staffordshire and Manchester areas (see map on my website www.peakastronomy.co.uk ). Activities can also take place at other locations across the UK, whether that be at your home location, or a particular dark sky location, interesting landscape feature or viewpoint. I can recommend suitable locations. This can be particularly useful for training courses or workshops focussing on the milky way or landscape astrophotography or to capture the highest quality images of deep sky objects. For locations outside of the area indicated on the map please contact me in advance so we can discuss locations, timings and additional travel costs. In most cases an additional charge of £25 per hour will apply for travel time from my base to and from the location (excluding 1st 2 hours which are included in the standard price), although if I'm able to link your booking with another activity or a multi-night booking this could be reduced. Peak Astronomy is delivered by the same team as the award winning myGuidedWalks, Experience of the Year 2023.   Inclusions What's Included 🧰 Equipment - Telescopes and astronomy cameras are provided but if you have your own kit and want to bring it along please feel free. 📋 Other - Experienced astrophotographer 🖼️ Photos - Pictures taken on the night available to download   What you'll need 🧤 Warm Clothing - Warm clothing and warm footwear with good grip, hats and gloves. Standing around at night can be cold whatever the time of year. ☂️ Waterproofs - In case of a passing shower, although we'll aim to avoid these. Also good to keep the wind off and stay warm. 🍴 Food - Snacks for during the event 🥤 Drink - Drinks or hot flask for during the event 📋 Other - A head torch and spare batteries, ideally with a red light. The red light prevents the torch from disturbing your night vision. The torch doesn't need to be bright and it best if it isn't!

Mountain Hare Discovery Experience - Bespoke private guided walk

Mountain Hare Discovery Experience - Bespoke private guided walk

A chance to see the rare Mountain Hares in England, arranged for your private group as a bespoke tour. Perfect for families, groups of friends of corporate groups. The highest points in the Peak District are the only places in England where you can still find Mountain Hares. Most people will never see them when walking in the hills but I have a 100% record of seeing them and getting some great photos on these trips. It goes without saying that it's worth taking along a camera with a long lens or zoom and binoculars if you have them. This activity is also available as a private Mountain Hare Photography Experience See our other listings, website or contact us for details. The walks can start from various locations depending on your preferences, such as the Snake Pass road, between Glossop and Sheffield, or from Old Glossop for a longer walk. I'll navigate you across the complex moorland terrain to some of the best locations to see Mountain Hares in their natural habitat. There will also be the chance of seeing short-eared owls, golden plover, red grouse, kestrels, and other wildlife on these trips as well as learning about the ecology and restoration of these amazing bog and moorland habitats.  The walk is mostly on a mixture of good tracks and smaller footpaths which can be rough in places and includes a few gradual hills if starting from the Snake Pass or some longer hilly sections if starting from Old Glossop. At any time of year, there are likely to be some muddy sections, especially once we start to head away from the main paths across the moors. The terrain here becomes rougher with no paths in some sections. Itinerary The walk can start at a number of locations depending on your preferred duration. We will discuss the options with you and agree an itinerary for you or your group. The shorter walks starts from the Snake Pass road, between Glossop and Sheffield. After a gradual climb of around 200m (600ft), we reach a flattening from where we leave the Pennine Way path. I will now navigate you across the complex moorland terrain to some of the best locations to see Mountain Hares in their natural habitat. Longer options of this walk are possible from a number of different locations with one of the best options being Old Glossop which would extend the walking to a total of around 10 miles / 16km and involve more hill. Crash Sites Walking Tour - Private Bespoke Group

Crash Sites Walking Tour - Private Bespoke Group

A fantastic and unique walking experience, arranged for your private group as a bespoke tour. Perfect for families, groups of friends of corporate groups. You will explore some of the wildest parts of the Peak District National Park and learn about some of the aviation history influenced by this unique landscape. • Discover hidden aviation secrets in the Peak Districts wildest landscapes • Experience and learn about the area’s nature and conservation with your guide • 1/2 day and full day options from 6miles to 15miles • Suitable for 1 person or groups of up to 8 people USAF Boeing B-29 Superfortress Overexposed Bleaklow is the setting for the most impressive crash site in the Peak District. Bleaklow is the second highest mountain in the Peaks and the location of some of its wildest countryside. Here you will have the opportunity to learn from your guide about the special moorland ecology and it's conservation. If you have an interest in navigation your guide will happily share some skills and you could even try navigating the group across a section of the notoriously complex Bleaklow moor! The B-29 Superfortress crash site is an extensive area of wreckage from a USAF Boeing reconnaissance plane nick-named “Over Exposed” which crashed on November 3rd 1948. This plane is famous for having filmed the first two Bikini Atoll atom bomb tests in July 1946 and it's involvement in relieving the West Berlin Blockade in 1948. After the Superfortress we will usually visit a nearby Lancaster Bomber site. This was a Mk.X, RCAF Lancaster and there is a memorial here to the Canadian crew. Below are a few other suggestions for crash sites in the local area which I could plan into your itinerary depending on your interest and how far you would like to walk. RAF Defiant Night Fighter This is one of the lesser visited crash sites on Bleaklow, providing another great option for a full day tour. It can be combined with both of the crash sites listed above or just the Superfortress. USAAF B24 Liberator This is another fairly extensive crash site on the lower flanks of Kinder Scout and provides a great option for a longer full day walk when combined with the Superfortress, or a half day walk from a number of locations. Other crash sites which can be included in the walk, or as separate trips at various nearby locations, include a Halifax Bomber, 2 Sabres, Dakota and a Dragon Rapide. Itinerary The walk will be on a mixture of good tracks and some smaller footpaths which are rough in places. There will also be some sections on open moorland away from any paths. At any time of year there are likely to be some wet and muddy sections, especially on Bleaklow and Kinder Scout with their peat bogs. As, at times we will be leaving the paths and walking across rougher ground as we head to the crash sites, walking boots providing ankle support and keeping your feet dry are strongly recommended. The walk will vary in length depending on which locations you wish to include. We will discuss and agree this with you. As a general guide it can be anything between a short 8km / 5miles and a more challenging 25km / 15miles. There are also a number of different locations where we could start the walk from such as the Snake Pass, Old Glossop or Hayfield. Some of the routes could include a fairly long hill of around 350m / 1200ft but there are also other less hilly options. National Park Experiences is a curated collection that brings the stories of our National Parks to life. Each experience offers an authentic insight into the landscape and special qualities of a National Park. All our events are approved as "Good to Go" Covid-secure by Visit England. Mountain Hares Discovery Walk

Mountain Hares Discovery Walk

A chance to see the rare Mountain Hares in England. The walk starts from the Snake Pass road, between Glossop and Sheffield. After a gradual climb of around 200m (600ft), we reach a flattening from where we leave the Pennine Way path. I will now navigate you across the complex moorland terrain to some of the best locations to see Mountain Hares in their natural habitat. There will also be the chance of seeing short-eared owls, golden plover, red grouse, kestrels, and other wildlife on these trips as well as learning about the ecology and restoration of these amazing bog and moorland habitats.  The walk is mostly on a mixture of good tracks and smaller footpaths which can be rough in places and includes a few gradual hills. Some of the paths is paved and tends to be a little slippy when wet. At any time of year, there are likely to be some muddy sections, especially once we start to head away from the Pennine Way across the moors. The terrain here becomes rougher with no paths in some sections. This experience is also available as a private bespoke event for you/your group on a date you select and with a number of different walks to the hare locations. ItineraryThe walk starts from the Snake Pass road, between Glossop and Sheffield. Kinder Scout Adventure - Guided Walk

Kinder Scout Adventure - Guided Walk

Probably one of the most interesting routes on Kinder Scout. Starting from Edale we walk through the lovely village of Edale and across fields before heading fairly steeply up towards Grindslow Knoll. From here the route we take is a stunning walk past many of Kinder's key features including the Wool Pack rocks and Pym Chair until we reach one of Kinder Scout's 3 trig points at Kinder Low. We then continue on to the famous Kinder Downfall which changes its appearance depending on the weather from a lovely sunny lunch spot by a trickling stream to an almost perpetual waterfall on windy days when the water blows upwards as in the photo! Next we walk into the notoriously complex "groughs and hags" that cover the plateau. This is an area of deep winding channels through the peat, the sides of which are often several metres high making navigation extremely difficult. The terrain will obviously be rough as we cross this area for approximately 2km and involve the crossing of several of these channels and working our way around some areas of bog. Having reached the main path once again we follow the southern edge back to Edale. ItineraryThe walk is partly on good footpaths but partly on very rough pathless terrain and includes one fairly steep ascent of about 350m/1150ft. At any time of year there are likely to be some muddy sections and the crossing of the plateau will almost certainly encounter areas of peat bogs and water. You need be reasonably physically fit and have some experience in walking in rough terrain. Walking boots providing good ankle protection are definitely required and gaiters highly recommended. All our events are approved as "Good to Go" Covid-secure by Visit England. Please note: All group walks require a minimum of 2 people booked to go ahead. If by chance you are booking for 1 person and nobody else books then you would be offered the choice of a full refund or to switch to an alternative date.   If you'd like to discuss the walk or other activities before booking please contact us.  Thanks, Paul Smith, myGuidedWalks.   Inclusions What's Included 📋 Other - Experienced award winning guide and qualified Mountain Leader.   What you'll need 🧤 Warm Clothing ☂️ Waterproofs 🍴 Food 🥤 Drink 📋 Other - Hiking Boots essential. Kinder Scout Eastern Summit from Edale - Guided Walk

Kinder Scout Eastern Summit from Edale - Guided Walk

A classic Kinder Scout hike, to it's quieter eastern summit from Edale in the Peak District. Starting from the village of Edale we head up one of the quieter and most impressive routes onto Kinder Scout. Once we reach the top we walk along the southern edge of Kinder, taking in little-known rock formations such as the Druids Stone. We will then reach the fantastic eastern corner of Kinder with it's magnificent views over to the Eastern Edges. Next we follow the northern side of Kinder and it's eastern summit trig point before taking one of the famous unmarked "Kinder Crossings" across the notoriously difficult to navigate plateau. On our way back to Edale there a number of different route options we can take depending on the group and conditions on the day. The walk is partly on good footpaths and partly rougher stony paths. There is one fairly long ascent of about 400m/1200ft and a similar descent at the end. There are likely to be some muddy sections and due to the nature of the Kinder Scout plateau we may well encounter areas of peat bogs. You will need to be reasonably physically fit and have some experience of walking in rough terrain. Walking boots providing good ankle protection and grippy soles which will also keep your feet dry in boggy areas are definitely required. Kinder Scout from Hayfield - Group Walk

Kinder Scout from Hayfield - Group Walk

This route is one of the shorter Kinder Scout walks that I lead up the highest mountain in the Peak District. We set off from Bowden Bridge car park, the starting point for the famous 1932 Mass Trespass. We head up an easy track to Kinder Reservoir which provides some great views. The track gives way to a smaller path now which can be rough and muddy in places as we start to head up the main climb towards Kinder Scout. After a fairly tough climb of around 400m (1200ft) we reach the plateau of Kinder Scout and follow the edge towards the spectacular Kinder Downfall passing the hidden Charged Rock. After the downfall we continue on to the strangely named Kinder Low which is actually the highest of Kinder's three trig points at 633m (2077ft). It's not quite at the very summit, which is a rather indistinct point 3m higher and about 800m away on the boggy plateau. I can guide you to it if you want to be at the very top! It's now time to start heading back down which we do via a nice path over Kinderlow End. Before we drop down we'll pass a "Bowl Barrow", which is an early Bronze Age (~2000BC) burial mound. We continue down through the fields and back to Bowden Bridge. Please note that due to parking restrictions in Hayfield this trip will now start at 08:45 at weekends. During the summer to minimise parking issues I recommend arriving by 08:30.   Inclusions What's Included 📋 Other - Experienced award winning guide and qualified Mountain Leader.   What you'll need 🧤 Warm Clothing ☂️ Waterproofs 🍴 Food 🥤 Drink 📋 Other - Hiking Boots essential. Shutlingsloe & Three Shires Head - Guided Walk

Shutlingsloe & Three Shires Head - Guided Walk

This is a great guided walk on the western edge of the Peak District.  The walk heads up through Macclesfield Forest on good paths which are a little steep in parts and then up over open moor to the summit of Shutlingsloe, known as the "Matterhorn of Cheshire" with an amazing 360° view. Next we head down into the quiet valley of Wildboarclough. A local myth suggests the name comes from it being the location where the last wild boar in England was killed.  From here we head up again over the next ridge and down to the amazing Three Shire Heads with its packhorse bridge, waterfalls and pools. This spot marks the meeting point of Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire and is a popular local spot for a wild swim. After a break we head north along the Cheshire - Derbyshire border and then make our way over to Cumberland Brook and the path back down to Wildboarclough before heading over the shoulder of Shutlingsloe and back to the car park in Macclesfield Forest. Lud's Church & The Roaches - Guided Walk

Lud's Church & The Roaches - Guided Walk

A contrasting and unique walk on the Peak District’s Western Edge. We start off along a quiet country lane and soon reach lovely oak woods and a visit to Lud’s Church, an amazing 15m deep green chasm in the ground, covered in moss and ferns. Lud’s Church is widely accepted as being the setting of The Green Chapel in the 14th century poem “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”, now a new blockbuster movie. Lud’s Church was also a secret location of worship frequented by the Lollards around the same time. From Lud’s Church we continue through the woods and up over the open moors to Roach End. After reaching Roach End we follow a well made path along the spine of The Roaches, a popular climbing area which provides great views across Cheshire and Staffordshire on a clear day. After passing the high point of the day at 505m we gradually head down the ridge, an area currently undergoing extensive work by the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust to help protect and regenerate this important peat moorland habitat. Finally we head back over The Roaches and continue along a lower scenic ridge to the Hanging Stone (pictures below). After taking in the view here we head back to Gradbach. Soon we leave the main path and gradually climb up an easy track until which reach Dog Rock providing some fantastic views. The path becomes much smaller and almost indistinct now as we head across the notoriously difficult to navigate Bleaklow. Having an experienced guide with you means there’s no need to worry! As we continue over Bleaklow the route will be a little rougher in places. There will be great opportunities here to teach you a little about this special and important ecosystem on this the second highest mountain in the Peaks and the location of some of its wildest countryside. If you have an interest in navigation your guide will happily share some skills and you could even try navigating the group across a section of the notoriously complex Bleaklow moor! After a total climb of around 350m (1200ft) we reach the “kissing stones”, a good spot for some lunch. From here we head over to the site of the B29 Superfortress plane crash (sadly all 13 crew members died). The plane was on a short journey from Lincolnshire to Burtonwood near Warrington when it hit the top of the hill in low cloud. This crash site is an extensive area of wreckage from the USAF Boeing B-29 Superfortress nick-named “Over Exposed” which crashed on November 3rd 1948. This plane is famous for having filmed the first two Bikini Atoll atom bomb tests in July 1946 and it's involvement in relieving the West Berlin Blockade in 1948. To finish the walk we will take a route passing the crash site of a Lancaster Bomber Mk.X. This crash site and memorial to a Canadian Lancaster Bomber is about a mile away from the B-29 crash site. From here we will continue down the ridge with great views back down to Old Glossop. The walk is mostly on a mixture of good tracks and smaller footpaths which can be rough in places and includes 1 fairly long hill. The hill up to Bleaklow is a steady climb of about 350m (1200ft). At any time of year there are likely to be some muddy sections, especially once we start to head up towards Bleaklow with it's peat bogs and we will be leaving the paths for about 1km across rougher ground as we head to the crash site. There is a fairly long gradual descent back down to Glossop. ItineraryThe walk is on a mixture or good tracks and then mostly smaller rougher paths. There is one long hill with a climb of around 350m / 1200ft and a similar descent. These are fairly steep in places. The total walk is around 14km / 9miles. For private bookings this can be extended by including additional crash sites to provide walks of between 14km / 9miles and a challenging 25km / 15miles. Half day walks from around 8km / 5 miles area also available as private group walks. There are also a number of locations where we could start bespoke walks from. Stanage Edge & Keira Knightley Rock - Guided Walk

Stanage Edge & Keira Knightley Rock - Guided Walk

A spectacular guided group walk along Stanage Edge visiting Keira Knightley Rock from Pride & Prejudice.  This walk is a shorter version of our popular Stanage Edge & Burbage guided walk with less distance and height gain but the same amazing views. Starting off fairly gently, we head down to North Lees, the inspiration for Thornfield Hall in Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre and a popular photo location. Next we climb up to the famous gritstone edge of Stanage, meaning "Stone Edge", a 5 km long gritstone escarpment famous for climbing. Here we visit the rock now known as Keira Knightley Rock and made famous from the 2005 film of Pride and Prejudice. This makes for the perfect shot for one of those must have Instagram moments. The walk continues along a medieval packhorse route to the summit of Stanage Edge, with spectacular views all the way along. From here we continue walking to Burbage and visit it's ancient hill fort of Carl Wark. From Burbage we return to the car park after making one final visit to Stanage Edge to see some of the old Mill Stones, now the symbol of the Peak District National Park and another great photo location. Ladybower & Derwent Edge - Guided Walk

Ladybower & Derwent Edge - Guided Walk

This great guided walk starts from Fairholmes car park at the top end of Ladybower Reservoir near Bamford, Derbyshire. Before we head to the hills we will take time to visit the famous Derwent Reservoir dam where the “Dambusters” of the Royal Air Force 617 Squadron practiced 75 years ago this spring. From the dam we head along the shore of Derwent Reservoir before the 300m/1500ft climb up onto the glorious Derwent Edge. The climb up is mostly gradual and on a clear day provides great views of the surrounding region. Once on the ridge we pass the "Lost Lad" cairn and then follow a good paved path through the peat and heather landscape with a good chance for spotting some of the local wildlife. The views continue all the way along the ridge as we pass the various rocky tors and beautifully shaped rocks such as Back Tor, the Cakes of Bread, Dove Stone, and the Salt Cellar to name but a few. From the end of the ridge we wind our way gradually back down to Ladybower Reservoir and our return to Fairholmes passing the site of the old submerged village of Derwent. ItineraryThe walk is mostly on good footpaths and includes one ascent of about 300m/1000ft. At any time of year there could to be some muddy sections. All our events are approved as "Good to Go" Covid-secure by Visit England. Please note: All group walks require a minimum of 2 people booked to go ahead. Aviation History Walking Experience

Aviation History Walking Experience

A fantastic and unique walking experience which takes you on three contrasting walks as you explore this beautiful and wild part of the Peak District National Park and learn about some of the aviation history influenced by this unique landscape including the famous Dambusters of the RAF’s 617 squadron. • Discover hidden aviation secrets in the Peak Districts wildest landscapes • Experience and learn about the area’s nature and conservation with your guide • Enjoy a 2 course lunch at the famous Yorkshire Bridge Inn and see their memorabilia of the Dambusters • 4 hour (half day) or 7-8 hour bespoke experience A key part of this experience is about providing the flexibility to taylor your itinerary for you and your group. There is the choice of a half day (morning) or full day for the experience. You can also choose to include a special Dam Busters themed 2 course lunch at the Yorkshire Bridge Inn if you wish. The options can be selected when you book your tickets. If you decide not to include the lunch we will have more flexibility within the walking elements of the itinerary and the potential to spend longer visiting additional crash sites on Bleaklow including a Lancaster Bomber and/or a Defiant night fighter. Please feel free to call me or email me to talk further about these options although you do not need to decide until nearer to the event. Below is an outline of the standard experience. Morning Walk - USAF Boeing B-29 Superfortress: A short drive takes you to Bleaklow, the Peak District's second highest mountain and location of some of its wildest countryside. Here you will have opportunities to learn from your guide about the special moorland ecology and it's conservation. If you have an interest in navigation your guide will happily share some skills and you could even try navigating the group across a section of the notoriously complex Bleaklow moor! The main crash site is an extensive area of wreckage from a USAF Boeing B-29 Superfortress nick-named “Over Exposed” which crashed on November 3rd 1948. This plane is famous for having filmed the first two Bikini Atoll atom bomb tests in July 1946 and it's involvement in relieving the West Berlin Blockade in 1948. If you opt for the full day experience without the pub lunch we also have the options to visit further crash sites on Bleaklow. After the option of a great 2 course lunch at the Yorkshire Bridge Inn, those booking the full day experience will head out for a second walk during the afternoon. There are a number of different options for the afternoon walk which we can decide upon on the day. One of the most popular is walking from the Yorkshire Bridge up the nearby Winn Hill which provides one of the best views in the area of the surrounding hills and valleys. ItineraryThe walks are on a mixture of good tracks with some smaller footpaths which are rough in places. The afternoon walk includes a hill of 250m (800ft) if you decide to walk up Winn Hill. At any time of year there are likely to be some wet and muddy sections, especially during the morning walk on Bleaklow with it's peat bogs. We will be leaving the paths for about 2km of walking across rougher ground as we head to the crash site so walking boots providing ankle support and keeping your feet dry are strongly recommended. For safety and insurance reasons we ask that customers don't consume alcohol during the event, We will be finishing off the standard tours back at the Yorkshire Bridge Inn after which you'll be free to enjoy their full services if you wish!
