Introduction to Felting Alpaca
Alpaca fleece is wonderful for felting projects as it is so soft with less of the “tickle factor” of sheep’s wool and as the fibres are hollow it gives an amazingly warm and light finish. Felt is the oldest form of fabric known to mankind and consists of layers of fibre that have been agitated and compressed until the fibres lock together forming a mat. This most versatile of processes shows you how to create flat felt such as a scarf using wet felting techniques. Then after a home cooked lunch, if you are staying for the full day, the opportunity to try your hand at needle felting a picture panel. Having learned the basics you can easily practise your skills at home with fibre and kits available to buy on the day. And if your interest is piqued, we offer more advanced courses moving on to making 3d wet felted items such as hats and slippers. Inclusions What's Included 🍴 Food - Tea and cake for the half day, lunch for the full day. All diets catered for with notice. 🥤 Drink - Tea and coffee 🧰 Equipment - All fibre and materials What you'll need 📋 Other - If you have any alpaca fibre from your own animals that you don't know how to process, bring it along and we can assess it together and go over the basics of preparing it for use.
Camelidynamics Handling Course
Our training is based on the Camelidynamics approach which is a respectful and effective way to train and handle llamas and alpacas. Victoria is a Senior Camelidynamics Consultant and has trained extensively with it's founder. It was developed by Marty McGee Bennett who has over 30 years of experience with camelids. It is a collection of methods that represents the most positive least intrusive techniques for training and managing camelids. Marty’s methods incorporate elements of TTouch and TTeam; principles and techniques developed by Linda Tellington Jones which have been thoughtfully adapted for llamas and alpacas. More recently, we have looked to the world of behaviour and found that all of Marty's principles are supported by the science. We look more specifically at why our animals do what they do, recognising how we make it difficult for our alpacas and llamas to do what we want. We will help you to learn how to train and manage your llamas and alpacas in a way that gives you an understanding of their behaviour and the importance of balance and leverage in paving the way for cooperation instead of relying on restraint and force. Victoria has gained a Certificate of Excellence following an intensive 8 week international webinar course Living and Learning with Animals 2014 with Dr Susan Friedman of Utah State University. USA. You will learn a set of skills that once mastered, make every animal easier to work with. Whether your difficulty lies in catching, haltering, and leading or husbandry tasks like injections or toe nail trimming, this approach based on Camelidynamics principles offers respectful, scientifically sound answers that anyone can learn and use safely and effectively. Working with Alpacas and Llamas in Animal Assisted Activity
As public awareness of the benefits of animal-assisted interventions increases and more providers are looking to set up programmes, there is an ever growing need to ensure a consistent, responsible and safe approach to these interventions. Victoria is a Senior Camelidynamics Consultant, a qualified counsellor and has worked as a paramedic and in-service counsellor for over 30 years. She has combined her knowledge and drawn on her experience in both areas of working with people and animals to create the course that she wanted when she first considered entering the "therapeutic " realm. The three day course is aimed at alpaca and llama owners who have an interest in working with their animals in Animal Assisted Activities (AAA) for the well-being of others. It does not allow you to offer or call your activities "therapy". In order to call any animal activity "therapy" the handler must have a recognised qualification that would allow them to offer therapy in the absence of the animal. You will leave with knowledge of the history of animal interventions, of the practical application of Camelidynamics handling skills, practical, legal and ethical considerations in programme planning and some ideas about how to work alongside alpacas for the physical and psychological benefit of others. The course is delivered in a mix of theory and animal practicals.
