Letterkenny-based folk duo Without Willow bring their elegant harmonies and virtuosic musicianship to the museum at the old Donegal Town Station, performing an intimate set in a historic passenger coach that once served the people of the county before the closure of the railways in 1959. Friday 18th September, 6pm. A free Culture Night event supported by Donegal County Council.

Donegal Railway Heritage Museum are proud to present this special event remembering the railways of East Donegal in Convoy’s Black Memorial Hall on Wednesday 19th August at 7pm . This event will feature a presentation on the Strabane Letterkenny Railway and East Donegal’s wider railway history, a showcase of historic photographs and artefacts from our archives (and hopefully those of the community at large!), and most importantly an opportunity for community members to share their own railway memories and socialise over tea and light refreshments. Convoy Enterprise Centre will also provide artefact displays from Convoy Woollen Mills, a renowned textile operation that helped draw the railway to the area and that grew alongside it for some fifty years. Tickets are free, but a suggested €5 donation to the museum helps cover our costs and support our work.

A site-specific promenade-style play by Maura Logue / Dark Daughter Productions set in Donegal Town Railway Station in 1944. Generously supported by Donegal County Council and Creative Ireland's Culture & Creativity Award. Donegal Town is one of the most historic places in Ireland, and has given its name to Co. Donegal. It has been a Gaelic town, a Plantation town, an estate town and a market town. Owned successively by three great families – the O’Donnells (1474-1610), the Brookes (1610–76) and the Gores (1676-c.1950s) – the most striking feature of its history is its former political prominence. Under the O’Donnells, it was for 130 years the capital of Tír Chonaill – effectively an independent state and a minor international power. Later, it suffered four sieges (1601, 1641, 1651, 1689) but was never captured, it was the principal estate town of the Gore family for 240 years, a parliamentary constituency for 187 years, the administrative centre of a poor  law union for 85 years, and the archetypical Irish market town for two centuries. Matthew Potter is a native of Donegal Town but has been resident in Limerick since 1974. He is curator of Limerick Museum and an associate fellow in the School of History and Geography, University of Limerick. He has published extensively on urban history and local government history.  Time/Date: Saturday 15th August, 3pm.
