North Yorkshire’s tales of superstition and mystery have conjured the imagination of artist collective H.A.G.S as they reinterpret local historic folklore through a feminist lens.Responding to legends such as Danby’s shapeshifting Moorland Witches, North Sea Selkies and the alluring merman of Skinningrove, H.A.G.S inspire us to consider what these myths can offer us today. Under Helen’s guidance you will learn how to set up a frame loom and to create plain weave, as well as learn some lovely decorative techniques. Helen will guide you throughout with demonstrations as well as individual support. There will be a wide range of colourful and textured yarns for you to enjoy weaving with. Join glass artist Judith Gill in the Studio Gallery to create your own piece of autumnal coloured fused glass to take home and keep.  J udith is passionate about sharing her skills with new people, you don’t need any artistic experience to take part in this workshop. The cost includes an afternoon of expert tuition, materials, equipment and the firing of your piece.  Your design will be fired in Judith’s kiln and returned to Danby Lodge for you to collect and keep forever! Spend the day with James McGairy in our Studio Gallery and master painting the landscape. Tickets are just £57.64 for a full day of tuition in a small, intimate group with expert guidance. Workshops are beginner friendly, teaching the fundamentals of working with acrylics, they are also suitable for improvers wanting to progress their skills to the next level. There will be a break for lunch, which can either be purchased separately from our on site café 'The Truffled Hog', or you can bring a packed lunch to enjoy in one of our picnic areas. 10.30am - 3.30pm Distance: 7.9 miles (this walk is moderate to challenging, it includes coming down the 199 steps in Whitby).  Led by the Cleveland Way National Trail Team, this lovely walk takes us away from the hustle and bustle of Whitby to more calming and beautiful landscapes.  We stroll out of the town centre along the River Esk and turn onto the Cinder Track, crossing the impressive Larpool Viaduct.  It’s a steady climb along the disused railway line of the Cinder Track for a couple of miles before we turn for the coast where we meet the Cleveland Way and King Charles III National Trails.  From here it’s a spectacular return to Whitby along the cliff path, with brilliant sea views and glimpses of shipwrecks.  We pass by Whitby Lighthouse and of course the amazing Whitby Abbey.   There are no major climbs on this walk (we descend the 199 steps at Whitby!) The overall height gained on the walk is 150 metres.   Dogs are welcome but must stay on a short lead at all times.   Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult and be physically able to do the walk. With insights into the history and geology of the area and the environmental and conservation work taking place. 4.30pm - 7.45pm - meet in the Dark Skies Station. A Night time Exploration of Biofluorescence in Nature!  Come and join Lucy from Wild Roots Foraging for a spectacular evening exploring biofluorescence in nature! We will begin our evening with a wild-spiced, mushroom hot chocolate and a wander around Crow Wood to look at some of the wild edible and medicinal plants and fungi, as the light fades.   As darkness begins to fall over us, we will begin our UV hunt for biofluorescent fungi, plants, mosses, lichens and bugs with our UV torches.   Children under 14 go free (all children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult).    IMPORTANT INFORMATION    Due to the nature of the walk, we are only allowing 2 children per adult. Each child will be provided with a Hi-Vis vest but to be extra safe, we want to ensure all adults are able to monitor their children closely in order to reduce risk, as we will be walking in total darkness.
