Join us for a special evening event at the Trimontium Museum this Hallowe'en, as we explore the ghosts, monsters and traditions of the past – from the Celtic Samhain to the Roman festival of Lemuria In our candlelit gallery, hear local tales of hauntings, horrors and strange traditions stretching back across two millennia, guided by our fantastic storytellers, Nicola Agricola and the ghostly apparition of a Roman soldier — a restless spirit from the world of Trimontium who may have a few tales of his own to tell... Do the footsteps of Roman soldiers still echo across Newstead after dark, nearly two thousand years after they left? What did the Romans believe happened to the restless dead — and why did they perform the eerie rituals of Lemuria? What secrets might still lie beneath the Eildon Hills, where Thomas the Rhymer was said to have encountered the Fairy Queen? Vampire monks... haunted abbeys... And what of the museum itself? Could some of its ancient objects have brought a few spirits along with them? And then there are the monsters. This year, prepare for a fleeting encounter with one of the most fearsome figures of the ancient world. When Medusa's fury is unleashed... don't meet her gaze... WALK IN THE SHADOW OF THE ROMAN ARMY Join us on our long running and ever popular guided walks to the Trimontium Fort site. We offer 2 types of walk to suit all abilities and times. This option starts at the Trimontium Museum, in the heart of Melrose. Passing by the historic Melrose Abbey and through the ancient village of Newstead, your guide will cover local history on route to the fort site, where the Roman shadows hidden within the landscape will be revealed.  During the walk across the Fort Site, discover the impact of the Roman presence on the local population & the details of the various archaeological digs at the site.  Learn about the mysterious pits found at Trimontium, where a wealth of treasures, weaponry and even human remains were found.  See magnificent views of the Eildon Hills, the Leaderfoot Viaduct and Melrose Abbey. All this while you are surrounded by the stunning, Scottish Borders landscape and walk alongside the mighty River Tweed Your ticket includes a visit to The Trimontium Museum. You can visit the museum any day during the week of your planned walk and we suggest you allow at least 45-60 minutes to experience the museum.  Museum opening times can be found here YOUR WALK The Full Walk is 3.5 hours, meeting at the Museum at 1.30pm.  Please arrive at least 1 hour before the walk starts if you want to visit the museum on the same day,  although we recommend visiting in the museum in the morning, having some lunch and then returning for the walk! We suggest you bring a drink (and maybe a snack), wear footwear suitable for paths and fields, and dress for the changeable Borders weather! There are no facilities on the route except what nature can provide! Dogs are welcome on the walks, but we would urge you to bring water for them and on very hot days consider leaving them at home, as there is little shade or shelter on the site. This walk is not suitable for people with impaired mobility or children in buggies due to the occasionally muddy, uneven paths. YOUR TICKET Combined walk & museum tickets are valid for return visits to the museum for 12 months from date of purchase. You can exchange your booking confirmation for an annual pass card at the museum.  If you are a UK Tax Payer, please consider agreeing to Gift Aid your ticket , at no extra cost to you, to allow us to claim 25p in every £1 to support the work of the Trust.  BOOKING FEES There is a small booking fee applicable to all online tickets. The meeting point is accessible by car and public transport. You can visit the museum on the same day if you wish, but make sure you leave at least 45-60 minutes for your museum visit, plus time to travel out to the fort site. We recommend visiting in the museum in the morning/ early afternoon, having some lunch and then heading out to the fort site to meet the walk! It is a 5 minute drive from the museum to the meeting point for the short walk. For cyclists it is approximately 1.8 miles. If you need to use public transport you can find out about bus timetables  here We suggest you bring a drink (and maybe a snack), wear footwear suitable for paths and fields, and dress for the changeable Borders weather! ENJOY A UNIQUE ROMAN OBJECT-HANDLING SESSION WITH OUR EXPERIENCED TRIMONTIUM TEAM In this session you will get up close and personal with a range or original artefacts from the Roman site at Trimontium and from across the Roman Empire. Our experienced staff will take you on a journey through the Roman Iron Age here in The Borders and using carefully selected original objects from the Trimontium Collections you will get the chance to examine & experience this intriguing and enigmatic part of Scotland’s history for yourself. Your session will include the chance to make and take home a Roman style wire-wrap ring…similar to those found at the site of Trimontium… End your workshop exploring the Trimontium Museum and see how the artefacts help us tell the story of the Roman frontier fort and its people. This session is ideal for anyone interested in archaeology, the Roman Iron Age, museum collections and stories from the past. Suitable for Adults and Children (from approx. 8yrs and up) YOUR VISIT The museum is fully accessible. We have lots of activities for children, included in the admission ticket.
