Discover how archaeologists uncover the stories held within human remains in this fascinating introduction to osteoarchaeology.This session explores the science behind studying human skeletons and how osteoarchaeologists use evidence from bones, DNA, and other scientific techniques to understand past lives, health, injury, disease, and identity.

Topics covered include:
  • Understanding the human skeleton: basic anatomy and physiology
  • How we age and sex a human skeleton
  • Wear and use on human remains
  • Trauma, injuries, and mechanisms of damage
  • Evidence of chronic disease
  • Ancient DNA and pathogenic DNA
  • Forensic facial reconstruction
  • Fixed stable isotopes

Please note: This session will involve the use of real human remains.
This session is designed for anyone with an interest in history, archaeology, and the science behind understanding the past. It is an accessible introduction for enthusiasts and is not intended as professional-level teaching, CPD, or formal archaeological training.
Places are limited to small groups of approximately 8–10 participants per session, ensuring an engaging and interactive experience.
Two sessions are available:
  • Morning session: 10:00am – 12:20pm (including a 20 minute break)
  • Afternoon session: 1:00pm – 3:20pm (including a 20 minute break)
