Lake Charlotte | A Flooded Cypress Forest
Did you know? Lake Charlotte is the one of largest cypress tree swamps in Texas, part of a complex of at least four lakes that lie to the east of the Trinity River Delta. Hundreds of shorebirds are feeding on the shallow lake bottom. White ibises, blue herons, egrets, rosy spoonbills, hawks and owls, eagles, cormorants and anhinga, beavers, wild hogs, deer, snakes, and alligators, all call Lake Charlotte home. This is one of the largest rookeries along the Texas Gulf Coast. Lake Charlotte was inhabited for hundreds of years by ancient Native Americans whose diet include clam shells. These clams lived in the muddy bottoms of the lakes; they would be unflavored by modern standards. Clams were an important food source for the original inhabitants who consumed them in large numbers and left piles of discarded shells throughout the area, including at our kayak launch. Change in the composition of the lake waters greatly decreased their numbers and few, if any, are to be found today. Take this tour for a chance to witness alligators in their natural habitat. We teach alligator safety. Having the chance to see mature alligators from up close is a very humbling and rewarding experience. Most likely we will have the flooded forest all to ourselves to enjoy. This is a very peaceful setting anytime of the year. Kids and beginners alike are welcome! Duration: 4-5 hours. Paddling Time: 3-4 hours. Paddling Distance: 6-8 miles. Champion Lake Paddling Trail | Guided Tour
Champion Lake: Did you know? Champion Lake is an 800-acre, cypress-studded jewel within the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge. Flanked by over 2,300 acres of bottomland hardwood forest, oxbow lakes, and cypress-tupelo swamps, it is widely recognized as the most biologically rich section of the refuge. Towering bald cypress trees draped in Spanish moss rise directly out of the quiet waters, alongside views of black willow trees and winding bayous. This prime sanctuary offers unmatched birdwatching. Depending on the season, you may spot majestic bald eagles, ospreys, swallow-tailed kites, and wood storks soaring above, while colorful songbirds like painted buntings and vermilion flycatchers bound through the canopy. Below, wood ducks, roseate spoonbills, egrets, and herons forage along the shallow banks. Champion Lake and the adjoining Pickett’s Bayou are also famous for their reptilian and aquatic life. Almost year-round, American alligators can be seen silently cruising through the calm waters alongside various species of turtles, alligator gar, and river otters.
