Full-Day Guided Mountain Bike Tour – Wiltshire’s Ancient Landscapes Our full-day mountain bike adventure begins in the quiet canal-side village of Honeystreet, the perfect gateway to some of Wiltshire’s most remarkable riding and ancient landscapes.
We roll out gently along the towpath of the beautiful Kennet & Avon Canal, warming the legs beside calm water, narrowboats, and open countryside. Soon the route turns upward as we begin a steady climb onto the sweeping chalk hills of the North Wessex Downs, where wide views stretch across one of southern England’s most historic landscapes. From the high ground, a flowing descent leads us onto The Ridgeway — often called Europe’s oldest road — a prehistoric route that has carried travellers, traders, and riders for over 5,000 years. Riding here feels like stepping back in time. One of the highlights of the journey is the extraordinary Valley of Stones, where around 20,000 ancient sarsen stones lie scattered across the hillsides, creating a surreal and unforgettable landscape. From here we drop down into the historic village of Avebury, home to the world-famous prehistoric stone circle. Our route passes directly through the stones themselves, offering a rare chance to ride through one of Britain’s most remarkable ancient monuments.
The adventure continues with a climb up Windmill Hill, one of the earliest Neolithic ceremonial sites in Britain. From the summit we continue along high chalk ridges, linking sections of the historic Old Bath Road and the scenic Wessex Ridgeway, where fast rolling trails and open skies make for some of the best riding of the day.
