Learn what life was like on Long Island during the American Revolution under the British Occupation; Judge Isaac Thompson, owner of Sagtikos Manor and a magistrate of the Crown, permitted General Clinton and British forces to use the manor as temporary headquarters during the American Revolution. While many residents who refused to swear loyalty to the British Crown fled the area, Isaac Thompson and his family remained in Islip. Why did he choose to stay? Following the American victory, President George Washington embarked on his national tour to visit those who had contributed to the success of the Revolution. On April 21, 1790,Washington spent the night at Sagtikos. Why did he choose Sagtikos? And what role, if any, did Isaac Thompson play in the Patriot cause? Experience the re-enactment of Isaac Thompson, the British and what life was life during the occupation at Sagtikos. Colonial demonstrators will display their wares, cemetery tour and garden talk and colonial activities for the kids. Are you a Loyalist? The British 23rd Fusiliers military will be questioning you on whether you signed the Oath of Loyalty to the Crown. Or are you a patriot? The Culper Spy Ring will be on hand to make sure you understand what freedom from England meant.

On July 4, 2026, America will celebrate the most important milestone in our country’s history-250 years of American Independence. On April 20, 1790 George Washington spent the night at Sagtikos Manor as part of his LI tour. Our specialty tour "Washington and the Manor" focuses on the colonial rooms in which Washington spent time. In addition, and in recognition of the Presidents’ Day, we will present some insight, using prints in our permanent collection, into the life of George Washington - who in 1790, at the age of 58, became our first president. February 15th - tours begin at 11:00 am and run every hour with the last tour at 3:00 pm.

Join us for a holiday tour where we will explore toys through the ages, from Colonial times to present day.

Join us on a crisp fall day at our Historic Fall Festival. Learn from our Colonial Demonstrators, view our sheep shearer, and drill with the Company K, 67th Regiment. There are plenty of activities for children including kids’ crafts, puppet show and hands-on activity table. The festival includes  "Mourning at the Manor". Learn the steps of a Victorian Mourning as you walk through the rooms in the Manor and meet the "family" members as they tell the story of their mourning experiences. Then join us for a procession to the Thompson Family Cemetery where you will meet some of the spirits of the family members.

Visit Sagtikos with a house tour of the Manor. The first part of the house was built in 1697 by Stephanus Van Cortlandt and then added on by the Thompsons’ in 1772 an again in 1902 to include 42 rooms. All the furnishings, artwork and personal objects are original and are exactly as the family left it, There are 10 acres of property that include; a walled garden, carriage house, buttery and the Thompson-Gardiner family cemetery. George Washington spent the night here on April 21, 1790 during this Campaign Tour of Long Island.

Mourning at the Manor: visit the Manor and experience the "mourning" customs of a Victorian Wake. Then join our funeral procession to the family cemetery for a ceremony and join our spirits of the Thompson family in the cemetery.
