A DAY OF HISTORICAL FUN Get ready for a day of living history as the Roman and Iron Age worlds come to life in the Scottish Borders. Meet Roman soldiers and Iron Age communities, explore ancient crafts and skills, and discover what life was like on the northern frontier of the Roman Empire nearly two thousand years ago. With re-enactors, demonstrations and hands-on activities throughout the day, the festival will offer a lively glimpse into the people, cultures and conflicts that shaped this region in the Roman period. VR Experience will be operational during these times. If you plan to visit the museum as part of your day at the Festival, please visit between these times. TICKETS Entry tickets from £7.50 Members & Newstead residents can purchase discounted tickets. Members should bring their membership card on the day. Newstead residents should bring proof of address on the day. You can add on a discounted visit to the Trimontium Museum in Melrose when purchasing your festival ticket. Museum add on tickets will be valid for 7 days from 1st August. Some of the craft workshops have a small additional charge to take part, and require booking. These are also available on this platform. Tickets will be on sale, subject to availability, at the gates on the day. Nettle String Workshop
Collect Nettles & Make Your Own Nettle String Bracelet At this workshop, run by Instinctively Wild, participants will find, prepare and craft their nettles to create nettle string, which can then be used to make a bracelet. You'll be given step-by-step instructions, guided by your expert workshop leader The workshop will last around 90 minutes. You can find the location of the workshop via the Festival map, available on the day. PARTICIPANT INFORMATION: All participants will need a valid Festival entry ticket to access the workshop The workshop ticket includes all equipment, you don't need to bring anything. Dowsing Workshop
Learn about the ancient practice of Divining At this workshop, you will learn the history & archaeology of divining, its practical uses & materials used. You'll also get a chance to try divining for yourself, under the guidance of our experts. Suitable for ages 14 years plus. The workshop will last around 50 minutes. You can find the location of the workshop via the Festival map, available on the day. Family Iron Age Pot Workshop
Make your own Iron Age clay pot, as part of our Roman & Iron Age Festival. At this workshop, you will make a clay pot, using ancient techniques and air dry clay. Iron Age communities did not have pottery wheels but used their hands to mould and shape clay. We will show you how to do this, and then you can decorate your pot in whatever way you want. Suitable for all ages. The workshop will last around 30 minutes and will take place in the Trimontium Craft Tent. PARTICIPANT INFORMATION: All participants will need a valid Festival entry ticket to access the workshop This activity is suitable for all ages, although smaller children may need some help from an adult. The workshop ticket includes all materials and you can take your pot away with you. As we are using clay, please ensure you are wearing suitable clothing for a craft activity.
