EACH MONTH, EXPERIENCE A FASCINATING NEW TALK TOPIC , LED BY HISTORY EXPERTS Join us for our October Trimontium Talk THURSDAY 18 October 2026 Back to Burnswark with Dr James O'Driscoll ONLINE VIA ZOOM Dr O’Driscoll is lecturer in Geospatial Archaeology at Glasgow University and has a wealth experience as a field archaeologist with a special interest in hillforts of the Iron and Bronze Ages. And who better to collaborate with Trimontium in renewed and insightful investigations into the leviathan of the Roman siege site at Burnswark Hill in Dumfriesshire. It is no overstatement to say that this magnificent monument is one of true national significance and James will reveal the fascinating discoveries of the 2025 and 2026 seasons and give us pointers where future work may take us.   TICKET TYPES   - This talk takes place online only, via Zoom.  The link will be sent out to members 48 hours prior to the talk day. From the legendary enchantresses of myth such as Circe and Medea, to the feared witches of Roman literature—the strange strigae and Thessalian sorceresses of ancient imagination—and the everyday practitioners of spells, curses, and protective charms, this talk explores how Romans understood the supernatural. It will delve into the archaeological and literary evidence for the Roman world, exploring artefacts associated with sorcery and ritual activity, alongside the laws that sought to control “forbidden” acts in an empire where religion, superstition, and fear were often deeply entwined. EACH MONTH, EXPERIENCE A FASCINATING NEW TALK TOPIC , LED BY HISTORY EXPERTS Join us for our December Trimontium Talk THURSDAY 10th December Heroines of Heritage: Women of Romano-British Studies by Dr Rebecca Jones &  Dr Tatiana Ivleva  ONLINE and IN PERSON The early days of Romano-British research were dominated by male excavators, such as Francis Haverfield, Ian Richmond and Mortimer Wheeler, but many female archaeologists also made vital contributions to the discipline, in spite of the huge cultural barriers that stood in their way. Tatiana Ivleva, Research Fellow at Newcastle University and Rebecca Jones, Keeper of Scottish History and Archaeology at National Museums Scotland will give us valuable insight into the revolutionary activities of these heroines of heritage.
