EACH MONTH, EXPERIENCE A FASCINATING NEW TALK TOPIC , LED BY HISTORY EXPERTS Join us for our June Trimontium Talk THURSDAY 11th June The Games Romans Played by Dr Andrew Newton ONLINE and IN PERSON Many Roman archaeological sites yield up evidence of leisure activities; for example the fragments of gaming boards and the gaming pieces that were used with them. In this talk, Andrew will explore the history of 'Toys and Games', and what these artefacts may tell us about the societies that invented and played with them. In an era when many heritage settings are seeking to engage with local schools; is there are role for incorporating activities based upon historical games into the displays that we have available within our museums (and how might this fit in with national initiatives like 'Maths in Museums').  Andrew (AKA Marcus the Medicus) volunteers with a number of museums and is an Ambassador for Archaeology Scotland. This amazing project has highlighted just how important Carlisle was to the Romans in their push northwards. He will take time out of this year’s dig schedule to bring us up to date with the very latest discoveries from this hugely informative site. EACH MONTH, EXPERIENCE A FASCINATING NEW TALK TOPIC , LED BY HISTORY EXPERTS Join us for our August Trimontium Talk THURSDAY 13th August Seeing the Dead: Roman Gypsum Burials in York with Prof Maureen Carroll ONLINE and IN PERSON Prof. Carroll is Professor of Archaeology at the University of York. She also leads the ‘Seeing the Dead’ project, which has used 3D imaging and other scientific techniques to examine over 20 gypsum-encrusted Roman period inhumations found in York, Doncaster, and surrounding areas. Fine details from fabrics to fingerprints have been preserved by the plaster and Prof Carroll will share some of the rare insights that have been gained into the care and attention lavished by the Romans on their dead, young and old. And who better to collaborate with Trimontium in renewed and insightful investigations into the leviathan of the Roman siege site at Burnswark Hill in Dumfriesshire. From the legendary enchantresses of myth such as Circe and Medea, to the feared witches of Roman literature—the strange strigae and Thessalian sorceresses of ancient imagination—and the everyday practitioners of spells, curses, and protective charms, this talk explores how Romans understood the supernatural. It will delve into the archaeological and literary evidence for the Roman world, exploring artefacts associated with sorcery and ritual activity, alongside the laws that sought to control “forbidden” acts in an empire where religion, superstition, and fear were often deeply entwined. Tatiana Ivleva, Research Fellow at Newcastle University and Rebecca Jones, Keeper of Scottish History and Archaeology at National Museums Scotland will give us valuable insight into the revolutionary activities of these heroines of heritage.
